Wood Fencing: All About the Wood for Timeless Beauty and Versatility
There are a number of post and board options that are worth considering. Posts tend to be full round or 4x6 rough-sawn pressure treated pine. Full rounds are chosen for their utility and budget considerations. 4x6 posts are for those that want the best. Both of these posts are chosen for strength and longevity. Agricultural fence posts are a specialty item then contain a special preservative that cannot be found in big box stores.
Boards are rough-sawn 1"x6"x16' planks. We recommend either oak or pressure treated poplar. We see pine being used but do not recommend it. Traditionally oak is the preferred species but that is changing. It is very strong and durable but tends to warp. Pressure treated poplar is softer but is still a hardwood species. It tends to stay straight as we believe is lasts just as long as oak.
